COURSE OBJECTIVES

This course intends to teach power system stability problem and handling, creating controller for stability issues on power system applications. The course introduces the following topics: Introduction to power system structures and simulation, Synchronous machine modeling, Excitation system modeling, Turbine-Governor modeling, Transient stability analysis, Signal analysis, Voltage Stability, Frequency Stability.

  • Transient Stability Analysis,
  • Small angle stability analysis,
  • Voltage Stability Analysis,
  • Frequency Stability Analysis.

There will be practical examples of each above topics which requires fundamentals of PowerFactory.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND?

The training course is intended for

  • Transmission System Operator
  • Power system operators/engineers
  • Consultants/ Academicians

However, the course should also be of interest to other electrical engineers who wish to develop their knowledge on using DIgSILENT
power system analysis and simulation Software.

ABOUT SPEAKER

Dr. Ahmet Onen received the B.Sc. degree in Electrical-Electronics Engineering from Gaziantep University in 2005. He received the M.S degree in Electrical-Computer Engineering from Clemson University in 2010 and his Ph.D. from Virginia Tech – Electrical and Computer Engineering Department in 2014. Prior to joining Sultan Qaboos University as a faculty member, he was a member of EDD company located in US to develop software for distribution companies. He is in the editor board of Electrical Engineering (Springer), Frontiers in Energy, El-Cezeri Journal of Science and Engineering. He is currently assoc. Professor at Sultan Qaboos University, at ECE department. His research interests are, Transmission Network and Smart Grids, Big Data in Power Systems, Renewables and Integrations, Power System Optimization, Cost-Benefit Analysis, Energy Storages, Demand Response, FACTs Devices and their application, Block Chain Applications, MicroGrid and Virtual Power Plants.

SCOPE OF THE COURSE

Session 1: Fundamentals Power System Stability

Stability definitions (Real Problems from Industry), Classifications in stability, Models of Network Elements for Stability Studies in PowerFactory  synchronous machine, asynchronous Machine, Load Model, PWM Converters  etc.). This is session includes exercises on RMS Simulation on synchronous machine, Excitation Systems (AVR, PSS), Prime Movers and Speed  controllers.

Session 2: Transient Stability

Rotor Angle Stability Background,  qual Area Criterion (Critical Fault Clearing Time, Critical Angle etc.), Factors  influencing Transient Stability. This is session includes exercises on Critical  Clearing Time calculation, effect on generator operator point on stability.

Session 3: Oscillatory Stability

Oscillatory Stability Background,  synchronizing & Damping Torque and Eigenvalues, Factors Influencing Oscillatory Stability,  odal Analysis: Oscillatory stability in Digsilent. This is session includes  exercises on Small signal stability in time domain simulation and modal  analysis.

Session 4: Voltage Stability

Voltage Stability Background, Basic  concepts, Voltage Stability Contributing Factors, Long-term vs. Short-Term  voltage Stability. This is session includes exercises on Steady state voltage  stability, PV and QV Curves, Dynamic voltage stability and effect of load  modelling on voltage stability.

Session 5: Frequency Stability

Frequency  stability  background, Basic concepts, Inertia, Regulation Action and Primary Reserve, Under-Frequency Load Shedding. This is session includes exercises  n Frequency deviation after generator outages, Primary Control on Frequency  stability.
